2025 Ends ‘n’ Picks Exhibition and Competition Information
A competition and exhibition for Australian based weavers sponsored by the Handweavers and Spinners Guild of Victoria. Following the success of Designer Drying (kitchen towels) and Designer Dining (tableware), the HWSGV has decided to keep the competition/exhibition and rename it as Ends ‘n’ Picks to emphasise its weaving aspect. This year's focus will be SCARVES - scarves, cowls, wraps - that extra layer we drape around us to keep us warm, to enhance our outfit, to hide an undesirable aspect, or to win a heart.
Scarves have been worn since ancient times – Queen Nefertiti in Egypt in 14th century BC wore a woven headscarf, and a 9th century BC sculpture shows Assyrian emperor Ashurnasirpal wearing a scarf. The scarves were not worn only for warmth– women in Athens used them to enhance their seductive charm, Egyptian belly dancers wore them like belts to highlight the body movements, the Chinese terracotta warriors donned them as a mark of their military rank.
The Oxford dictionary defines scarf as a “length or square of fabric worn around the neck or head” , but we won’t let that limit us – impress us with your scarves, wraps, mobiuses, cravats, cowls, ties....
All articles can be made with any fibre, but protein fibres (eg, wool, alpaca, camel, etc) should be no more than 40%, except silk, which may be 100%.
