4 Shaft Certificate of Weaving

Introduction from Ilka.

For many years, the Guild's 4 and 8 shaft Certificate courses have provided a wonderfully thorough training in Handloom weaving. Combining traditional theory with practical design skills and experimental approaches, these rigorous programs require quite a commitment from teachers and students alike. In 2020, our 4 shaft Certificate Course broke new ground when we moved to online classes as a consequence of the Covid pandemic. Reflecting back on it, we did really well adapting to the times! Kids and pets were part of our lessons as we supported one another from home and via email. We discovered the benefits of digital slideshows and utilised Excel as a grid for live weave theory, re-gathering at the Guild between lockdowns. The exhibition is a sample of the wonderful output from this terrific group. Congratulations weavers!
As I hand over the teaching of the Certificate I thank Gerlinde Binning and Irene Schiffer who shaped this curriculum before me and generously shared their time and notes as I came on board some 10 years ago. My thanks also to the hard working Guild Committee and to Jeanette Holkner for her steadfast support and masterful formatting! I will always recall the rigour of these great courses with great satisfaction and I know they will continue to flourish in Jeanette's capable hands.
