Carmel Hanna

Teaching Convenor

My interest in knitting and crochet started when I was very young. Around 6 or 7 years old. Both my Mother and Grandmother were avid knitters and crocheters.

I had a friend back in the eighties who acquired a spinning wheel and it immediately took my interest. I joined the local group and purchased a spinning wheel and I was away with a new interest. This one did take up a bit more room!

I joined the Guild while they were at the Meat Market and I learnt weaving in the early nineties. The Guild's move to Shakespeare St., saw me start my journey of teaching spinning. I do enjoy teaching as I feel I learn just as much from the students as they learn in class.

I feel my interest in all crafts is still growing. There is always something new to learn. I enjoy learning about the history and emergence of our crafts.

The Guild's aim is to bring together those who practise handweaving, spinning and allied crafts. To help and encourage them to increase their knowledge, understanding and skills by discussion, demonstration, exhibition, teaching and the provision of quality resource materials.

In the spirit of reconciliation the Handweavers and Spinners Guild of Victoria acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay respect to their elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people today.
